When talking about stray dogs, some people may immediately think of dogs that are abandoned by their owners. However, that is not always the case. Some dogs have never been owned and have been roaming the streets their entire life, the last kind are the type of dogs that wandered from their house and never found their way home. They often face challenges daily. Things like finding food and clean water makes it challenging for them to live. A lot of the stray dogs have difficulty seeking medical attention when they are hurt. The mortality rate is quite high because most strays are deprived of the necessities needed to survive.

While some strays are taken into shelters and others are being cared for by community members, not all strays are fortunate enough to live in an environment that can allow them to grow up into adults. The condition of most dogs is terrible. A lot of dogs freeze in the winter and don’t have clean water to drink in the summer. Fortunately today, more and more stray dogs are being adopted by people who care for them. However, others may be a little hesitant about taking in a dog because these animals have been living in the wild without any proper medical attention. Others might be considerate of the fact that some of the stray dogs might carry diseases like rabies. According to the World Health Organization, “rabies is estimated to cause around 59,000 deaths annually in over 150 countries.” Stray dogs are also reported to be more aggressive towards human beings because of being neglected. They often cause property damages and show no fear of humans because of their living environment. Some stray dogs grew up in areas where abuse is common. There have been stories and reports where kids would beat up dogs and leave them to die. These living conditions contribute to the aggressive behaviors of most strays.

While there are many organizations and shelters in the world helping out stray dogs, there are always more dogs that need our care. According to ASPCA, “approximately 3.9 million dogs enter animal shelters each year.” With the huge amount of stray dogs entering a shelter, there are still millions of other dogs out there that need a warm place to stay. It has been said that dogs are the best friends of humans, and with more care and attention towards them, there will be less and less stray dogs in the world.
